On the eve of the 29th anniversary of the EDSA-1 People Power revolt, militants on Tuesday tried to picket the house of President Benigno Aquino III in Quezon City.

However, Quezon City police blocked the militants from getting near Aquino’s house on Times Street, radio dzBB’s Allan Gatus reported.

The militants managed to stay at a distance from Aquino’s house, the report said. In their program, the militants called on Aquino to step down from office due to his alleged mishandling of recent events. Militants and critics of the President had called for his resignation due to the supposed mishandling of the Jan. 25 operation in Mamasapano, Maguindanao that killed 44 Special Action Force troopers and 18 Moro Islamic Liberation Front fighters. But MalacaƱang had maintained Aquino will step down only upon the end of his term on June 30, 2016.

Among the militants that took part in Tuesday’s protest were Southern Luzon members of fishermen’s group Pamalakaya, labor group Anakpawis and urban poor group Kadamay.

On Wednesday, the government will mark the 29th anniversary of EDSA-1, which ousted then President Ferdinand Marcos and installed Aquino’s late mother Corazon to the presidency.
